The illusion to travel, to spend a few days outside and change routine are often overshadowed by the inexhaustible energy of hyperactive children. How to survive these trips with hyperactive children in which they are usually more upset than usual?
Parents with children with ADHD live with stress that their child is a more moved child than normal, since they will have to watch them more, since they will continually want to touch and see everything. Perhaps they are used to this happening in their usual environment, but what happens when the family goes on vacation?
Long trips where the child has to stay with the car seat belt fastened, traffic jams, crying, screaming and the fear that he will not behave well in that museum that you were so eager to visit, makes the parents in the end not enjoy the getaway and do not even make other trips for fear that it will become nonsense.
However, the family should not do without vacations but instead provide solutions to the surplus energy of an ADHD child. It is important for parents to anticipate long hours in the car and other situations that can occur on trips because children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder will want to change activities constantly. But what to do?
- Break the barrier of fear of what may happen, the scary "what if ..." What if our son gets bored during the trip, what if our son spends the day with a tantrum? "What if he is not able to enjoy himself? The only thing that fear can cause is an unpleasant feeling of anxiety that prevents you from seeing things clearly.
- Get organized: It is the key to the success of the trip to be able to keep the child's nerves under control. It is convenient to carry out a daily planning that indicates what to do, where to go or when to eat and leave little room for improvisation. If you also have a plan B in case something unexpected alters the planning, much better.
- Maintain the routines: Why change the routine when leaving home? ADHD children do well with this type of routine of activities, meals, and dreams. Breaking with everything will only make children more restless and parents more desperate.
- Norms and rules: the rules on vacation are not to be broken. If we are clear that the child has to collect his things, when he is away from home he will continue to do so, the same as sitting well at the table or not hitting. We must make the little ones see that a good attitude will bring them satisfactory rewards, explaining that this will benefit the development of the trip.
- Rest the appropriate hours: Parents and children must comply with the rest schedules that allow them to face a day full of energy. Staying up late or sleeping for a few hours will only lead to more conflict when children are more tired than usual.
- Physical activityExcursions and sports that require movement will help the child and it will be a great idea to reduce the whirlwind of concentrated energy by just a few centimeters.
- Patience and understanding: Family support will be vital for the child to feel understood and find the motivation to behave well. The affection, the affection and reminding him how much we love him will help him to fit in that puzzle of emotions and energy that are part of the child.
