Valentina Tereshkova She was one of those pioneering women for her time, those who make way for others in history. Was the first woman to travel into space.
He spent 71 hours in space, from June 16 to 19, 1963, performing 48 turns around the earth on the Vostok VI ship, with hardly any room to move and with the suit on at all times.
This is one of the stories that are collected in the book Fearless. The exceptional voyages of 25 explorers, from the publishing house Pastel de Luna.
"Amelia Earhart crossed the Atlantic in his little plane, Junko tabei climbed Everest, Margaret Fountaine he traveled the world painting, Grace margerite went around the world in a blimp ... No matter how the trip is, the important thing is that you love it.
Fearless it is not a book about perfect women who made extraordinary things, is a book about people who wanted to know above all. It doesn't matter if they reached their goal or not, the trip was their best gift and it changed them forever. "
'I heard my heart beating to the rhythm of the countdown: three, two, one ... The ship began to climb and my body was crushed against the seat. It was my 'star hour', as we called the launch. 'Hey firmament, take off your hat. I'm on my way, 'I shouted so that the whole world would hear me.'
Valentina was born in 1937 in a small town north of Moscow. Her father died in the war with Finland and she, her mother and her two brothers had to work hard to survive. As a child I dreamed of being a train driver and discovering the world.
When she was 22, heaven began calling her. He saw an ad for a skydiving club and decided to give it a try, he didn't know that this would be the beginning of his new life. On the morning of April 12, 1961, he heard on the radio that his compatriot Yuri Gagarin had become the first man to reach space and that the army was looking for cosmonauts among female paratroopers. She secretly submitted a request and was one of the five selected.
Valentina had to study and train very hard, just like her teammates. Going into space is just as dangerous for women as it is for men. A month before the launch of the Vostok VI it was decided that Tereshkova would pilot it. The whole operation was carried out in secret, not even her mother knew what was happening. The Russian government feared that the Americans would get ahead.
On June 16, 1963, 26-year-old Valentina set off for the stars. His mission was not easy, he suffered vomiting and nausea during his 48 orbits around the Earth. Even so, it completed the experiments that were planned and managed to eject to parachute after 71 hours in space.
Upon her return she was treated as a hero, but was not allowed to return to space. Twenty years passed until another woman took part in a space flight. Valentina has never stopped dreaming of returning, she assures that those who have been so close to the stars leave a piece of their soul up there.
